Exhibition | Hella Dehaas

Born in 1926, Hella Dehaas spent her artistic career in Geneva, where she attended the École des Beaux-Arts. By the time she decided to devote herself entirely to art in 1964, she was already a cultivated and accomplished artist. Before broadening her palette of artistic techniques in several fields of the plastic arts, she first produced, over a period of ten years (between 1965 and 1975), a remarkable body of prints (woodcuts, linos, etchings), works that enabled her to acquire, in this field, an uncommon mastery and know-how. It is an extract from this specific part of his work that we have the pleasure of exhibiting this summer at the Cantine des Dents Blanches.

During the artist's lifetime, a support association was set up, which in 2007 gave rise to the Association Hella Dehaas, responsible for safeguarding her entire body of work. The present exhibition, the fruit of a passionate volunteer effort, presents engravings that have hardly ever been shown to the public.

The work of Hella Dehaas conveys the concern to give life to the material, so that it takes over and becomes itself the bearer of the artist's inner life. To this end, the pictorial language she uses is a blend of intelligence and spontaneity, allowing the symbolic to come to life as the bearer of the meaning she seeks to express. Throughout her artistic career, the artist kept a diary as a record of her patient, dogged work. The extracts she periodically drew from it for the "Friends of the Atelier" have real literary value.
